There's a place for specialist foods from Greenland in the USA
Most of the food produced in Greenland is sold in Greenland and Denmark or on other major European markets. But a recent export seminar in Nuuk showed that some food types from Greenland have a great potential for being sold on a, for Greenland, hitherto untried market, namely the American!
- It's traditional in Greenland to turn to Denmark and to the east in general to sell food products. But we believe that with the right approach, some of Greenland's products could be sold in supermarkets which focus on specialty foods, says export consultant Anders la Cour Vahl from Greenland Tourism and Business Council (GTBC).
GTBC had invited American John Roberts to be main speaker at the seminar. He has many years of experience as an expert on specialty foods in the USA, i.e. high quality foods that are not mass-produced and are often organic.

Amongst a wealth of useful information about exporting food to the USA, John Roberts also stated that more than 12,000 new food products each year see the light of day in the USA and he pointed out that, not least for products from Greenland, there is great potential for sales within the specialty food group.
Serious interest for exports "over there" Another speaker at the seminar, Anders Klöcker, who is food consultant for the Danish Embassy in Washington, talked about his experience selling Danish food products to the supermarket chain Whole Foods Market, which only sells high-quality products.
- The American market may seem gigantic and confusing at first sight, but countries that are further away from the USA than Greenland have achieved success with a series of products, even countries less developed than Greenland. So we are convinced that in some special niche-supermarkets in the USA there is also a place on the shelves for products from Greenland, said Anders Klöcker.
One of the companies from Greenland that took part in the seminar was the South Greenlandic producer of hand-made evaporated salt, Taratsit. In time, the company would like to sell its specially-made salt to the USA.
- The American market is exciting for us, because we make a unique product that comes from one of the cleanest seas in the world. We must consolidate the company first, but a next step could certainly involve export to the USA, says Anne Merrild from Qaqortoq, one of the two people behind Taratsit.
FACTS: - 80 percent of the marine-produced foodstuffs on the American market are imported. In other words, there is plenty of opportunity for exporting foods from the seas around Greenland to the USA.
- Especially families in the segment that have an annual household income exceeding 100.000 USD shop in specialty food supermarkets.
- The National Association of Specialty Food Traders (NASFT) has charted sales of specialty foods and documented that there is a clear increase in demand in the USA. Turnover in 2006 increased with 9.3 pct. compared to 2005. Sales have rocketed since 2001, with a total increase of 103%.
