New licences awarded for exploration in Greenland,

The British oil company Cairn Energy PLC has today January 9, 2008, in partnership with NUNAOIL A/S, been awarded four exclusive licenses for exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons in Greenland. The four licences has been given to block 1 and 3 of the Disko West Licensing Round, and two blocks situated in the Open Door area offshore Southwestgreenland. The total area covered by the four licences is approximately 45.144 km2.

The first years of exploration will include the acquisition of seismic data and environmental studies. Based on the data collected the companies are hereafter to decide if an exploration well is to be drilled.

International oil companies have now been awarded 6 out of 8 blocks offered in the Disko West Licensing Round. With the granting of the two new licences in the Open Door area, and the two licences awarded to EnCana in connection with the licensing rounds in 2002 and 2004, the number of exclusive licences for exploration and exploitation in the offshore areas of Westgreenland is up to a total of 10.
