More participants in the hunt for oil and gas in Greenland

A partnership consisting of DONG Energy, Chevron, ExxonMobil and NUNAOIL and one consisting of ExxonMobil, Husky Energy and NUNAOIL have each been awarded a licence for exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons. The awarded areas, block 4 and 6 respectively, are situated offshore West Greenland south and southwest of the island of Disko.

The licences were signed by the Minister for Minerals and Petroleum Kim Kielsen and representatives from the involved companies on October 11, 2007. The signing took place at a ceremony held at the House of Hans Egede, and was followed by a press conference and a reception.

It is The Home Rule of Greenland and the government of Denmark who, after a recommendation from the Joint Committee on Mineral Resources in Greenland, have approved the awarding of the licences regarding the Disko West Licencing Round 2006.

DONG Energy, Chevron and ExxonMobil each entered the partnership of the licence for block 4 with a 29 1/6 % share, while NUNAOIL entered with a 12,5 % share. DONG Energy is the operator.

ExxonMobil and Husky each entered the partnership of the licence for block 6 with a 43 3/4 % share, while NUNAOIL entered with a 12,5 % share. ExxonMobil is the operator.

In June 2007 Husky and NUNAOiL were awarded two licences for exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons for block 5 and 7 in the Disko West Licencing area. This means that Husky takes part in the exploration on 3 of the 8 blocks awarded in the Disko West Licensing Round.

Furthermore, the British company Cairn Energy PLC has applied for licences for block 1 and 3. PA resources AB has applied for a licence for block 8. This means that 7 of the 8 blocks that were offered now have been applied for. Applications regarding the second phase of the Disko West Licensing Round are to be handed in before February 1, 2008.
