Enzymes in Greenland could become a new business triumph
Researchers in Denmark are looking for microscopic life forms inside one of the world's most inhospitable natural phenomena: the Greenlandic Ikka towers. It's a biological treasure hunt, where the treasure could prove to be extremely rewarding, both financially as well as environmentally.

Deadly for microorganisms The towers grow like stalagmites from the bottom of the beautiful Ikka Fjord in South Greenland and their interior is corrosively alkaline and freezing cold. It is an environment that is deadly for microorganisms. And yet scientists expect to find bacteria here. Bacteria that companies in the bio-innovation field, like the Danish Novozymes, can use because they produce enzymes we have never seen before.
Suitable for washing powder Enzymes are made to dissolve proteins, fats and starches even in the ice cold interior of the towers. They will therefore be suitable for washing powder that washes effectively in cold water. Bacteria from the fjord in South Greenland could help us to conserve energy.
Reduced pollution But enzymes are able to do more than wash clothes. Industrially manufactured enzymes have helped a wide range of industries to reduce pollution. With enzymes, the paper industry is able to whiten paper without chlorine. With enzymes, the leather industry is able to tan leather without the use of solvents and with enzymes, wine, beer, cheese and bread can be produced using less energy and with a better taste.
Stop global warming When biologists go treasure hunting in the ice cold waters of Ikka Fjord, it is with the hope of finding enzyme-producing bacteria that can help us to reduce pollution and stop global warming.
