Edible salt from South Greenlandic seawater

Two female entrepreneurs in the town of Qaqortoq in South Greenland have set up a firm that will recover crystallized edible salt from Greenland's exceptionally clean seawater.

The firm trades under the name Taratsit, which is the Greenlandic word for 'salt'.

- Since the dawn of time the inhabitants of Greenland have obtained their required salt intake via the seas surrounding Greenland's coastline. Today chemically produced salt is imported from abroad, whilst the natural salt continues to flow in Greenlandic waters, and initially it will be this paradoxical situation we will try to change, says one of the entrepreneurs, Anne Merrild Hansen, to Greenland's leading newspaper, Sermitsiaq.

According to the entrepreneurs, South Greenland has a particularly favorable location for salt production due to the fact that the Gulf Stream flows past the South Greenlandic coast taking with it seawater with a high concentration of salt. The actual refinement of the salt will take place by hand in a process that can be traced all the way back to the Middle Ages.

The two entrepreneurs will initially try to sell the evaporated salt via Greenlandic specialist shops and restaurants.

It is the first time that an attempt will be made to produce edible salt on a commercial basis in Greenland.
