Angus & Ross wishes to re-open a mine in North Greenland

The Greenlandic mining company Black Angel Mining A/S has delivered an application for an exploitation licence for lead and zinc from The Black Angel mine situated near Maarmorilik in Western Greenland. The new established mining company is a subsidiary of the British exploration company Angus & Ross plc.

Before summer this year, BMP expects to present the application for an exploitation licence for the Greenlandic/Danish Joint Committee on Mineral Resources in Greenland. Subsequently, the application is presented to the Government of Greenland and the Government of Denmark for a final decision. Production is planned to start before the end of this year with an expectance of employment for 110 persons.

The application was followed up by a bankable feasibility study which a.o. contains geotechnical and financial calculations, but also an evaluation of the geological, societal, environmental and infrastructural aspects.

The company has completed the required Environmental Impact Assessment or EIA with focus on securing a minimum influence on the surrounding environment while winning the ore.

In the months to come, BMP will, in co-operation with the company, go through the extensive material to ensure that the project will be environmental and societal sustainable for Greenland.

The lead and zinc mine, The Black Angel, is situated north of the Nuussuaq peninsula in Uummannaq municipality. It closed on July 25th, 1990 after 17 years of operation. Expectations of profitability in re-opening the mine are based on findings of new resources in the area combined with increasing prices on lead and zinc in the later years and new technology.

The British parent company of Black Angel Mining A/S, Angus & Ross plc., has through several years made exploration in Greenland. The company's main focus is the Black Angel zinc/lead property and the surrounding occurrences.
