Aluminum plant in Greenland is a smart choice

An aluminum smelting plant in Greenland would emit much less CO2 than if it were placed elsewhere in the world, according to a new report.

The report, prepared by researchers from Aalborg University and 2.-0 LCA Consultants, indicates that because the proposed aluminum plant for Maniitsoq Island would get its electricity from a hydroelectric plant, the smelter would be more environmentally friendly than if it were built in a country where the power came from coal.

Globally, carbon dioxide emissions would be between three and 12 times less if the plant were in Greenland as opposed to somewhere else on the globe.

For Greenland itself, however, the plant would double the country's carbon dioxide emissions.

The report is a ‘life cycle assessment’, which was prepared by three independent international experts before it was presented. The government has thus had no influence on the conclusions of the report, stresses the Department of Housing, Infrastructure and Transport.

See a summary of the report in both Greenlandic and Danish here.
