Transportation in Greenland

Until the early 1950's, the infrastructure in Greenland was poor, although theoretically quite simple. Apart from transport by dog sledge in the north and east of the country, all transport in Greenland and between Denmark and Greenland took place by sea. All telecommunications were based on wireless telegraphy.

Today transport takes place on sea and by air, but not by land. There are no roads between towns or settlements in Greenland, and no railway either. The long distances and arctic climate represent a natural obstacle to land based transportation, although winter presents the possibility of using the traditional and widely used dog sledge and snowmobile.

Since the 1950's, telecommunications have expanded tremendously and Greenland was in fact the second country in the world to have a fully digitalised network offering a wide variety of modern services throughout the country.
